About

A Human Resources (HR) manager looks after the people side of a company: hiring new staff, running interviews, handling salaries and benefits, settling workplace disputes, arranging training, and keeping employees motivated. Every medium or large organisation — banks, software houses, factories, hospitals, multinationals and government departments — needs an HR team. You usually start as an HR officer or executive, then move up to manager and head of HR.

A day in the life

  1. 1Screen CVs and shortlist candidates for open positions
  2. 2Sit in interviews and coordinate with department heads on hiring
  3. 3Handle payroll queries, leave requests and employee records
  4. 4Run orientation and training sessions for new joiners
  5. 5Resolve workplace conflicts and disciplinary matters
  6. 6Plan employee engagement activities and performance reviews

Is this for you

You'll likely enjoy it if

  • You enjoy talking to people and understanding them
  • You are fair and can keep information confidential
  • You like organising events, files and processes
  • You can stay calm when handling disputes
  • You have good written and spoken English and Urdu

The hard parts, honestly

  • You sometimes have to deliver bad news — rejections, terminations, pay disputes
  • Balancing company demands with employee needs is a daily tension
  • Early roles are mostly paperwork and coordination, not decision-making
  • Growth to manager level usually takes 5–8 years of experience

Future outlook

HR demand in Pakistan is steady and growing with the IT, banking, telecom and FMCG sectors. Companies increasingly want HR professionals who understand data, labour law and employee wellbeing. An MBA plus certifications like SHRM or CIPD open doors to multinationals and remote roles with international firms, which pay well above local rates.

Growing fast

  • IT and software exports
  • Fintech and banking
  • E-commerce and startups
  • Remote HR for foreign companies
  • HR analytics and HR tech
  • Textile and manufacturing compliance

Working abroad

HR roles are in demand in the Gulf (UAE, Saudi Arabia), UK, Canada and Australia. Pakistani HR professionals with CIPD or SHRM certifications and an MBA move abroad for study or work; remote HR jobs with international companies are also common.

Your roadmap

Class 9–10: build the English, Maths and people skills that HR runs on — and keep your Matric marks strong for I.Com, FA or BBA later.

Milestones

  1. Start of Class 9

Lock in your Class 9 elective choices

Confirm English, Maths and pick Computer Science or a commerce-friendly elective where your board allows it.

  2. End of Class 9, before summer

    First full syllabus revision cycle

Finish Class 9 subjects properly before summer break — Class 10 moves fast and board papers test both years.

  3. Class 10, usually months before exams

    Board exam registration

Your school registers you with your board (FBISE, Punjab, Sindh, KPK, Balochistan or AKU-EB); O Level students register with Cambridge through the school. Check the form, subjects and fee deadline yourself.

  4. Class 10, winter before board exams

    Past-paper practice complete

Solve at least the last five years' board papers for English, Maths and your main subjects under timed conditions.

  5. Spring, Class 10

    Board exams

Matric and O Level exams are held in spring. These marks follow you onto every future admission form.

  6. After Matric results

    Make the group decision

With results in hand, choose I.Com or FA (Psychology/Economics) for the direct HR route, or FSc/ICS if keeping other options open, or A Level subjects with Economics and Business. Submit college admission forms on time.

What to focus on

  • English is your No. 1 HR subjectThroughout Class 9 and 10

HR managers live on words: job ads, interview notes, offer letters, emails. Score well in English now and practise writing clearly. Matric English marks also count when you apply for I.Com, FA or BBA admissions later.

  • Keep Mathematics strongClass 9 subject selection

HR handles salaries, budgets and headcount data. If your board offers General Maths vs Pure Maths, pick based on your next step: I.Com and BBA route students benefit from keeping proper Maths, since Statistics and Business Maths come later.

  • Add Computer Studies / Islamiyat choices wiselyClass 9 elective selection

If your board lets you choose an elective, Computer Science is the smart pick for HR — you will use spreadsheets, HR software and email daily. It also keeps ICS open as a backup route to BBA.

  • Know which marks will count laterEvery term exam, Class 9–10

Your Matric board result goes on every future admission form: I.Com/FA college admissions, and later BBA applications where some universities weigh Matric marks. A weak Class 9 record is hard to fix in Class 10, so treat every term exam as practice for the board paper.

  • Start thinking about the group decisionClass 10, before board results

After Matric you will choose I.Com or FA (Psychology/Economics) as the natural HR route, or FSc/ICS if you want to keep engineering or medicine open. Watch which subjects you enjoy now — Business Studies concepts, Economics news, and how people behave — that is your answer forming.

People to know

Most first jobs and internships come through people. Start early, and keep it simple.

  • Join or lead a school society

Debate club, student council, literary society or event committee — HR is people leadership, and these roles become your first 'leadership experience' lines on future CVs and university forms.

  • Organise one school event

A fun fair, sports day stall or farewell party teaches scheduling, budgets and coordinating people — the raw material of HR. Volunteer to manage a team, not just participate.

  • Start a simple LinkedIn habit

Create a free LinkedIn profile with your real name and school. Once a month, follow Pakistani HR professionals and companies (banks, multinationals, software houses) and read what they post about hiring and workplace culture.

  • Find one mentor

Ask a teacher, cousin or family friend who works in an office how their company handles hiring and salaries. One 20-minute conversation teaches more than a chapter — and adults remember students who ask.

What it costs

Government schools are nearly free; private school fees commonly run about Rs 3,000–25,000 per month. Board exam registration is roughly Rs 2,000–6,000 per student; Cambridge O Level exam fees are much higher, often Rs 20,000+ per subject.
