About

Electrical engineers work with electricity, power and machines. They design and maintain power grids, wiring, motors, control systems and electronics used in factories, buildings, telecom and energy companies. In Pakistan they are needed by WAPDA/discos, NTDC, big manufacturers, EPC contractors like Descon, and consultancies like NESPAK. The degree is BE/BS Electrical Engineering, a 4-year programme recognised by PEC; you must register with PEC to practise as a professional engineer.

A day in the life

  1. 1Morning meeting on a project: a substation, factory line or solar installation.
  2. 2Review drawings and load calculations; check wiring and cable schedules.
  3. 3Site visit to inspect installation, test panels and note faults.
  4. 4Use AutoCAD, MATLAB or ETAP to design or simulate circuits.
  5. 5Write progress reports and coordinate with clients and contractors.
  6. 6For grid jobs: monitor load, outages and maintenance schedules.

Is this for you

You'll likely enjoy it if

  • You enjoy maths and physics, especially electricity and circuits.
  • You like fixing or building things and understanding how machines work.
  • You are okay with site visits, not just desk work.
  • You like problem-solving with clear, testable answers.
  • You want a degree with jobs in both government and private industry.

The hard parts, honestly

  • The degree is maths-heavy; weak FSc maths makes first years tough.
  • Site and plant jobs can mean heat, dust, long hours and travel.
  • Fresh salaries are modest; big pay growth comes after experience or abroad.
  • Power-sector government jobs can involve slow promotions and postings away from home.

Stream to choose

FSc Pre-EngineeringICS also works

Subjects that matter most: Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Chemistry, English

Take FSc Pre-Engineering (Maths + Physics) after Matric Science; ICS with Maths and Physics also works. A Level with Maths and Physics is accepted. You then clear ECAT or university entry tests for BE/BS Electrical Engineering.

Where to work

  • NESPAKGovernment consultancy

Design and supervision of power and infrastructure projects.

  • Descon EngineeringEPC contractor

Power, oil and gas, industrial projects.

  • WAPDAGovernment

    Hydel power and grid operations.

  • Siemens PakistanMultinational

    Electrification, automation and energy products.

  • Lucky CementManufacturing

  • K-ElectricUtility

    Karachi's power distribution company.

Future outlook

Demand stays steady because Pakistan needs more power generation, grid upgrades, solar and industry electrification. Solar and renewables are the fastest-growing area, with many engineers moving into solar design and installation. Telecom, automation and manufacturing also hire electrical engineers. Government jobs through WAPDA, discos and NTDC remain a big employer. Salaries grow well once you have PEC registration and 5+ years of experience, and many graduates move to the Gulf for higher pay.

Growing fast

  • Solar and renewable energy
  • Transmission and grid upgrades
  • Industrial automation
  • Telecom and data networks
  • Construction and EPC projects
  • Electric vehicles and batteries

Working abroad

Gulf countries (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar) actively hire Pakistani electrical engineers for power, oil and gas and construction projects. UK, Canada and Australia are common for higher study and migration; PEC registration plus experience helps.

Your roadmap

Build a strong foundation in Maths and Physics for a future in Electrical Engineering.

Milestones

  1. End of Class 9

End of Class 9: Achieve at least 80% in Maths and Physics

This sets a strong base for FSc. Review weak areas during summer break.

  2. Mid of Class 10

Mid of Class 10: Finalize choice of FSc Pre-Engineering and select a college

Research colleges with good FSc programmes. Consider location, faculty, and past results.

  3. Spring of Class 10

Spring of Class 10: Take Matric board exams with strong preparation

Focus on Maths and Physics papers. Solve past papers and manage time.

  4. After Matric

After Matric: Enroll in FSc Pre-Engineering or A Level with Maths and Physics

Ensure you meet the required marks. Start preparing for ECAT/NUST NET early.

What to focus on

  • Master Class 9 Maths: Algebra and TrigonometryClass 9

These topics are the backbone of FSc Maths and will appear in ECAT and NUST NET. Aim for 90%+ in Maths board exams.

  • Master Class 9 Physics: Electricity and MagnetismClass 9

These chapters directly relate to electrical engineering. Understand concepts like Ohm's Law, circuits, and magnetic fields. Practice numericals.

  • Improve English comprehensionThroughout Class 9-10

Engineering programmes require strong English for textbooks and communication. Read English newspapers and technical articles.

  • Choose Science group with Maths and Physics in MatricClass 9, subject selection

Ensure your Matric subjects include Maths, Physics, and Chemistry. This is the prerequisite for FSc Pre-Engineering.

  • Aim for high marks in Matric board examsClass 10, before board exams

Many universities count Matric marks in their aggregate (e.g., 10% of total). A high CGPA in Matric gives you an advantage.
