About

A commercial pilot flies passengers and cargo for airlines such as PIA, Airblue, SereneAir, Fly Jinnah and AirSial. You start as a First Officer after earning a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) from a CAA-approved flying academy, build flight hours, and after roughly 8–12 years and 5,000+ hours can upgrade to Captain. Pay is basic salary plus flying allowances per hour and international layover allowances.

A day in the life

Do Matric (Science) then FSc Pre-Engineering or A Level with Physics and Maths — this keeps the CPL and PAF GD Pilot routes open. ICS with Physics and Maths can also work. Minimum 50–60% marks in FSc is usually required by flying academies.

Future outlook

Demand for pilots in Pakistan is growing as private airlines like Fly Jinnah and AirSial expand their fleets and PIA rebuilds. Globally, Boeing and Airbus project a need for hundreds of thousands of new pilots over the next two decades, so experienced Pakistani pilots are also hired by Gulf and international airlines. The main barrier is the high cost of CPL training, so the PAF GD Pilot route is a popular free alternative.

Build the foundation for a pilot career: score high in Physics, Maths, and English in Matric or O Level.

Milestones

  1. Class 9, first week

    Choose Science group with Physics and Maths

    In Class 9, select Physics, Chemistry, Maths and one other (Biology or Computer). Keep Physics and Maths, as they are prerequisites for Pre-Engineering and later CPL.

  2. Class 9, spring

    Score 80%+ in Class 9 annual exams

    Especially in Physics, Maths, and English. Good marks build confidence and keep the FSc Pre-Engineering stream open.

  3. Class 10, autumn to winter

    Complete Matric/O Level board exam preparation

    Solve past 5 years' papers for Physics, Maths, English. Use online notes from FBISE/Punjab Board. Aim for A* or 85%+.

  4. Class 10, spring

    Secure 80%+ in Matric/O Level board exams

    These marks will be considered by flying academies later. They also affect eligibility for PAF GD Pilot (minimum 60% in matric).

  5. Class 10 final term, before summer

    Decide on FSc Pre-Engineering (or A Level)

    Select Pre-Engineering (Physics, Chemistry, Maths) for the clearest path. If you choose Pre-Medical, you must add Maths later. Confirm your college offers Physics and Maths.

What to focus on

  • Strong base in Physics and MathematicsClass 9–10

    Physics and Maths are essential for the CPL theory exams and PAF GD Pilot selection. Aim for 80%+ in both subjects in Matric/O Level. Concepts will reappear in FSc and DGCA CPL exams. Use Punjab Textbook Board (free online) and Khan Academy in Urdu for practice.

  • Master English communicationClass 9–10, ongoing

    Aviation uses English globally. Start reading aviation manuals and listening to ATC communications on YouTube (e.g., VASAviation). Practice speaking clearly and confidently. English is tested in the ICAO English proficiency exam for CPL.

  • Health and discipline habitsClass 9–10

    Pilots need good eyesight (6/6 without correction for PAF), physical fitness, and mental discipline. Get your eyes checked annually, maintain a routine, and avoid smoking. PMDC Class 1 medical starts later, but foundation matters now.

  • Physics and Maths fundamentals

    Free at Khan Academy (Urdu) and Punjab Textbook Board e-books. Focus on mechanics, thermodynamics, algebra, and trigonometry.

  • English for aviation

    Free on YouTube: 'Aviation English' channels, VASAviation (real ATC audio). Learn aviation vocabulary and phraseology.

  • Typing and basic computer skills

    Free at typingclub.com. Pilots use flight management systems and need fast, accurate typing for communication and reports.

  • Geography and navigation basics

    Use free resources like Google Earth, Pakistan maps (CAA website), and YouTube channels on VOR/NDB navigation introduction. Learn major Pakistani airports: Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta.

Competitions

  • National Physics Olympiad (NOP)Class 9 or 10, usually held in October–December

    Organised by the Physics Society of Pakistan (or similar). Open to Matric and higher students. Sharpens problem-solving and physics concepts directly useful for aviation theory.

People to know

Most first jobs and internships come through people. Start early, and keep it simple.

  • School science or aviation club

    Join or start a club focused on aviation, physics, or robotics. Invite guest speakers (e.g., a local pilot or PAF officer) and do model aircraft projects.

  • PIA Air Cadet Programme

    If your city offers it (ages 15–22), join to get exposure to aviation, discipline, and potential scholarship links. Contact PIA Training Centre or check their website.

  • LinkedIn and aviation news

    Follow PIA, CAA Pakistan, and pilots (with parent supervision). Read articles from Pakistan Aviation News or ProPakistani. Start building a professional profile early.

  • Alumni and family connections

    Ask parents/teachers if they know any pilots, air traffic controllers, or aviation engineers. Request an informational interview (15 minutes) to learn about their journey.

What it costs

Matric (private school): PKR 3,000–10,000 per month. O Level per subject exam fee approx PKR 15,000 (Cambridge). Additional tuition and coaching can be PKR 2,000–5,000 monthly. Flying academy fees start at PKR 20–30 lakh for CPL – not yet applicable at this stage.
