About

A Chartered Accountant (CA) is a qualified finance professional trained by ICAP in Pakistan. CAs audit company accounts, prepare financial statements, advise on tax (FBR), and go on to lead finance departments as Finance Managers, Controllers and CFOs of banks, FMCGs and multinationals. The path is tough — exams plus 3–3.5 years of paid articleship at an audit firm — but qualified CAs are in high demand and among the best-paid professionals in the country.

A day in the life

  1. 1Morning: check client ledgers, bank reconciliations and trial balances
  2. 2Test samples of invoices and payments to confirm the accounts are fair
  3. 3Draft audit findings and discuss them with the client's finance team
  4. 4Prepare or review tax computations and FBR returns for clients
  5. 5Attend client meetings, stock counts or year-end closing sessions
  6. 6Evening: study for the next ICAP module during articleship

Is this for you

You'll likely enjoy it if

  • You enjoy Maths and working with numbers that must balance exactly
  • You are disciplined and can study consistently for years alongside work
  • You like business, money and understanding how companies really run
  • You want a respected professional qualification without a 5-year university degree
  • You can handle deadlines and pressure during audit season

The hard parts, honestly

  • ICAP exams have low pass rates; many students take several attempts
  • Articleship pay is low (PKR 25,000–60,000) despite long hours
  • Audit season means late nights and weekend work, especially January–March
  • The full journey from FSc to qualified CA takes roughly 5–7 years

Stream to choose

FSc Pre-EngineeringICSI.ComFSc Pre-Medical also works

Subjects that matter most: Mathematics, Accounting, Economics, Business Maths, Statistics, Commerce

Any Matric works, but take Maths. After Matric, I.Com or FSc Pre-Engineering/ICS with Maths is ideal; FSc Pre-Medical students must usually add extra Maths. A Level students should take Maths and Accounting/Economics. Then start ICAP's CA or do BCom/BS Accounting & Finance first.

Future outlook

Demand for qualified CAs in Pakistan consistently exceeds supply — ICAP produces only a few hundred new CAs a year while banks, Big 4 firms, FMCGs and listed companies keep hiring. Every listed company must by law have audited accounts, so audit and tax work is recession-resistant. Many CAs also move to the Gulf, UK or Canada where the ICAP qualification is well recognised, or work remotely for foreign clients.

Growing fast

  • Big 4 audit and advisory firms
  • Banking and microfinance
  • Fintech and digital payments
  • Tax advisory as FBR digitisation expands
  • CFO roles in IT exporters and startups
  • IFRS reporting for listed companies

Working abroad

ICAP CAs are in demand in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UK and Canada; many move after qualification for much higher pay. ACCA offers even easier international mobility.

Your roadmap

Matric (Class 9-10) – build a strong Maths foundation for your CA journey ahead.

Milestones

  1. Class 9 start

Choose Matric board (FBISE, BISE, AKU-EB, O Level)

Decide based on your city, school, and future plans. O Level is more expensive but accepted for A Level. Ensure Maths is compulsory.

  2. After Class 9 exams (spring)

Secure 85%+ in Class 9 annual exams

Good grades build confidence and are needed for some college scholarships. Focus especially on Maths and English.

  3. Class 10, before summer

    Decide FSc / I.Com / A Level subjects

Research colleges offering Pre-Engineering, ICS (Maths+CS), or I.Com. Visit open days. For CA, Maths is essential. Choose accordingly.

  4. Class 10 board exams (spring)

Achieve 90%+ in Matric board exams

High Matric marks strengthen your application for top BCom/BS programs (LUMS, IBA, etc.) and may qualify for HEC or PEEF scholarships.

What to focus on

  • Mathematics is non-negotiableClass 9-10, every day

CA exams (CFAP) require strong quantitative and analytical skills. Matric Maths forms the base. Aim for 90%+ in Maths board exam; it will also help in entry tests for BCom/BS Accounting and later CA.

  • English and Urdu matter tooClass 9-10

CA study material and exams are in English; good English comprehension and writing are essential. Urdu also counts in Matric aggregate for some scholarships. Focus on both.

  • Choose the right stream after MatricClass 10, before board exams

For CA, the best streams are FSc Pre-Engineering, ICS (with Maths), or I.Com. Avoid Pre-Medical unless you add extra Maths. Start researching college options in Class 10.
