About
A banker works in a bank's branch or head office, helping customers open accounts, deposit and withdraw money, process loans, handle remittances and sell products like cards and insurance. Big banks include State Bank of Pakistan (the regulator), commercial banks like HBL, UBL, MCB, Allied, Bank Alfalah and Meezan (Islamic banking). Entry is usually through a BBA/BS or even B.Com, or officer trainee schemes like NBP's OG-3. Career growth goes from officer to branch manager and beyond, with good job security and benefits.

Future outlook
Banking in Pakistan remains one of the largest private employers of graduates. Islamic banking is expanding fast, and digital banking, fintech partnerships and branchless banking have created new roles in IT, compliance and risk. Branch networks in smaller cities keep hiring fresh officers, though automation has trimmed teller-type jobs. Graduates who add skills in credit analysis, compliance or data do best.
Growing fast
- Islamic banking
- Digital and mobile banking
- Branchless banking / fintech partnerships
- Risk and compliance
- SME and agriculture finance
Working abroad
Pakistani bankers with experience move to banks in the Gulf (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar) and to roles in Islamic finance hubs like Dubai and Kuala Lumpur; professional qualifications like CFA or JAIBP help.
Your roadmap
Class 9–10: build the maths and English base that banking entry tests and BBA admissions will demand later
Milestones
Class 10, mid-year
Settle your stream shortlist with parents and a teacher
By mid-Class 10, shortlist I.Com, ICS or FSc Pre-Engineering colleges near you, check their admission requirements and last year's merit, and agree a first and second choice with your parents.
Class 10, by January
Complete the full Class 10 syllabus one revision cycle before boards
Finish the syllabus by January so February and March are pure past-paper revision. Board marks decide your college options for the banking route.
Class 10, spring
Sit the Matric board exams (spring)
Appear in your board's Class 10 exams — FBISE, Punjab, Sindh, KPK, Balochistan or AKU-EB — aiming for 80%+ so top colleges and I.Com/FSc programmes stay open.
After Matric results
Apply to colleges for Class 11 immediately after results
As soon as Matric results come, submit admission forms to your shortlisted colleges for I.Com, ICS or FSc. Merit lists fill fast; late applicants lose seats.
What to focus on
Take Mathematics seriously — it is your banking foundationBoth years, every term
Banks hire through officer tests (like NBP OG-3) that check quantitative ability, percentages, ratios and interest calculations. Your Class 9–10 maths — percentages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, algebra — is exactly this material in baby form. Master it now and the bank entry test after your BBA becomes revision, not panic. If your board offers elective maths, take it.
Keep English strong for the bank routeDaily habit from Class 9
Bank officer tests and interviews are in English, and BBA programmes at IBA, LUMS and IoBM weigh English heavily. Matric English grammar, comprehension and essay writing are the base. Read one English newspaper article daily — Dawn or The News — and note five new words. This habit alone puts you ahead of most candidates at the entry-test stage.
Aim for 80%+ in Matric board examsClass 10, spring board exams
Matric marks are not asked in bank interviews, but they decide which college and stream you get, and strong FSc/I.Com results later feed university merit lists for BBA and B.Com (Hons). A weak Matric closes doors to good colleges. Treat the Class 10 board exam in spring as the first serious exam of your banking career.
Start thinking about your stream decision nowClass 10, second half of the year
After Matric you choose I.Com, ICS, FSc Pre-Engineering, FA or A Level subjects. For banking, I.Com (Principles of Accounting, Economics, Business Maths) is the most direct route; ICS with maths and FSc Pre-Engineering also work well. Discuss with parents and a teacher before Class 10 results come, so you can apply to colleges on time.
Skills to build
Mental maths and quick calculationDaily, 10 minutes
Bank tests are timed; calculators are not always allowed. Practise percentages, fractions and interest sums mentally for 10 minutes daily. Free practice: Khan Academy (arithmetic and pre-algebra sections) or any timed past-paper maths questions.
English communicationStart in Class 9
Banking careers run on clear English — emails, reports, customer dealing. Free learning: BBC Learning English website and the British Council's free online resources. Write one short English paragraph daily about anything.
Basic MS Excel and typingClass 10, weekends
Bank work is spreadsheets and records. Learn Excel basics — formulas, sums, tables — and touch typing now, years before your first internship. Free learning: GCFGlobal (edu.gcfglobal.org) Excel and typing courses, all free.
Money and banking awarenessWeekly habit
Follow basic financial news: SBP policy rate announcements, new bank apps, branch news. Free learning: State Bank of Pakistan's website public pages and Dawn's business section. Understanding terms like 'policy rate' early makes economics in I.Com easy.
Competitions
National Mathematics Olympiad / school maths contestsAny time in Class 9 or 10
Ask your school about maths olympiad rounds and inter-school quizzes. Banking tests are quantitative, so any maths competition practice doubles as entry-test training and strengthens your college application.
School and board-level essay and speech competitionsThroughout both years
Banks interview candidates; confident English speaking wins offers. Debates, declamation contests and essay competitions in English build exactly this. Volunteer for every one your school or board holds.
People to know
Most first jobs and internships come through people. Start early, and keep it simple.
Talk to one adult in banking or business each month
Ask a relative, neighbour or family friend who works in a bank or does business how they started. One 15-minute conversation a month teaches you more about the real career than any website, and these contacts matter later for internships and references.
Join school clubs that build speaking and organising
Join the debating society, literary society or student council if your school has one. Banks promote people who can speak and lead. If your school has none, start a small business or maths club with two friends — that initiative itself is a story for future interviews.
Create a LinkedIn profile and follow banks
Make a simple LinkedIn profile with your school and interests, then follow HBL, MCB, Bank Alfalah, Meezan and the State Bank of Pakistan. You will start seeing how bankers describe their work — free career education in your feed.
What it costs
Government school Matric is nearly free; private schools run roughly PKR 3,000–15,000 per month. Board exam and registration fees are roughly PKR 2,000–5,000 total. O Level schools cost far more, often PKR 20,000+ per month.
Scholarships
PEEF (Punjab Educational Endowment Fund)After Class 10 results
If you are in Punjab with strong Matric marks and a low family income, PEEF funds your further education. Apply after Matric results through their website.
Sindh Endowment Fund (SEEF) and KPK/Balochistan equivalentsAfter Matric results
Provincial endowment funds offer need-based scholarships to Matric pass students for intermediate study. Check your province's endowment fund website after results.
School and board merit scholarshipsClass 9–10
Many private schools waive fees for position-holders, and boards like FBISE award merit certificates and prizes to top scorers. Ask your school office what exists.
Ehsaas / BISP education stipendsOngoing
If your family is registered with BISP, education stipends support school-age children. Verify eligibility through the BISP helpline or office.
