About

AI/ML engineers design and train computer models that learn from data — powering things like chatbots, fraud detection, medical image analysis and recommendation systems. In Pakistan you'll typically work in software houses, telecoms, banks or remote for foreign companies, writing Python, cleaning data, training models with tools like TensorFlow or PyTorch, and deploying them into real products.

A day in the life

Take Matric (Science) then FSc Pre-Engineering or ICS with Mathematics and Computer Science. A Level with Maths and Physics/Computer Science also works. Pre-Medical students need an additional maths bridge before most BS CS/AI programmes.

Future outlook

AI/ML is among the fastest-growing tech fields in Pakistan, with demand concentrated in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad from software houses, telecoms, banks and startups, plus remote work for foreign companies. Generative AI, machine learning engineering and data science roles are especially in demand. Your roadmap

Class 9–10: build the maths + computer base that AI/ML later runs on — Matric marks now decide your FSc/ICS options

Milestones

  1. Start of Class 9

    Confirm Science group with Maths, Physics and Computer Science

    Lock your Matric subject combination so both FSc Pre-Engineering and ICS stay open.

  2. By end of Class 9

    Finish first Python basics course

    Complete a beginner Python course and write 3–4 small programs of your own (not just tutorials).

  3. Mid-Class 10

    Decide target stream: ICS vs FSc Pre-Engineering (or A Level subjects)

    Talk to teachers and a mentor, compare Colleges' ICS results, and shortlist 2–3 Colleges for admission.

  4. Winter of Class 10, before spring board exams

    Complete board exam preparation with past papers

    Solve at least 5 years of Maths past papers under timed conditions; target 90%+ in Maths.

  5. Spring of Class 10, results and admissions by summer

    Sit board exams and submit College applications

    Take Matric/O Level exams, then apply to your shortlisted Colleges for FSc Pre-Engineering or ICS as soon as admissions open.

What to focus on

  • Score high in Matric Maths and Computer/PhysicsThroughout Class 9 and 10

    AI/ML is applied maths: matrices, algebra, statistics and logic all reappear in Class 11–12 maths and later in machine learning. Matric Maths and Computer Science (or Physics) are your first real proof of ability.

  • Take Science group, not ArtsClass 9 admission

    Choose the Science group with Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science (if your board offers it). This keeps FSc Pre-Engineering and ICS both open. Dropping Maths now closes the BS AI / BS CS door — Pre-Medical students later need an extra maths bridge, so avoid that detour.

  • Start Python before FScStart in Class 9

    You don't need to wait for college. Python is the language of AI/ML (TensorFlow, PyTorch are Python libraries). Learning loops, lists, functions and simple problem-solving in Class 9–10 means you'll finish FSc programming units in days and can start small ML projects by Class 11.

  • Plan the stream decision earlyMid-Class 10, before admission season

    By mid-Class 10 you should know your target: FSc Pre-Engineering (keeps UET/ECAT route open) or ICS with Maths + Computer Science + Physics/Statistics (most direct AI route). O Level students should pick Maths plus Physics and/or Computer Science at A Level. Ask teachers what your College's ICS results look like before choosing.

Tests and deadlines

  • Board exams (Matric / O Level)Spring of Class 10

    Your Class 10 board exams are the first marks that count. Punjab, FBISE and other boards conduct them in spring; O Levels run in May/June (and Oct/Nov). Strong Maths marks matter most for the AI route. There is no entry test at this stage — that comes with NUST NET, ECAT and university tests after FSc.

    The single most important skill for AI/ML. Learn variables, loops, functions, lists and dictionaries, then write small programs (calculator, quiz game, marks analyser).

    Machine learning is maths-heavy: algebra, functions, probability. Practise board past papers and beyond-the-textbook problems now so FSc maths feels easy.

  • Typing and basic computer useFree on typing.com and VS Code's own docs/tutorials

    Fast, accurate typing and comfort with files, folders and a code editor (VS Code) remove daily friction when you start coding seriously.

  • English reading and writingFree on Khan Academy grammar and BBC Learning English

    Documentation, Stack Overflow answers and university admissions all run on English. Read one technical article or news piece daily; NU admission tests have English sections too.

    PIEAS-run contest in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Maths for young students; doing well can lead to International Olympiad training camps. Strong maths students should try past papers.

    Ask your school or check NUST/FAST society pages for junior coding and computing contests. Even school-level hackathons build the habit of building things — exactly what AI/ML portfolios need later.

People to know

Most first jobs and internships come through people. Start early, and keep it simple.

  • Join or start a school computer/robotics club

    If your school has one, join; if not, ask a teacher to help start one. Clubs give you teammates for coding contests and hackathons, and seniors who can tell you honestly how ICS vs Pre-Engineering went for them.

  • Follow Pakistani AI/CS communities online

    Join free communities like GDSC (Google Developer Student Clubs — university chapters often let school students attend events), local Python Pakistan / Data Science Pakistan groups on Facebook and Discord, and follow Pakistani AI engineers on LinkedIn to see what the job actually looks like.

  • Find one mentor and ask real questions

    A cousin, senior, or teacher's contact doing BS CS / BS AI at FAST, UET or LUMS is gold. Ask them: ICS or Pre-Engineering? Which College? What did they wish they'd learnt earlier? One 20-minute conversation saves you a wrong stream choice.

  • Start a LinkedIn profile early (as a learner, not a job-seeker)

    A simple profile with 'Class 10 student learning Python' and later a post about your first small project builds a public track record. Universities and scholarship committees notice students who document their work.

What it costs

Government school Matric is nearly free (a few thousand PKR per year); private schools roughly PKR 2,000–15,000 per month. Board exam fees around PKR 1,500–5,000. Top private O Level schools can run PKR 20,000–60,000+ per month.
